Definately let the clutch fibers soak for 24 hours. I would put the new springs in. The old ones are prone to break due to wear. It cant hurt to put in the new springs. Why did they say dont replace them?

They may have said that because thry are stiffer which would give you a harder clutch pull. It's worth it though because your plates will have more pressure which in turn gives you a longer clutch life from less slippage. And +1 on what Maverick said. Soak them at LEAST over night, but longer never hurts! I usually start soaking mine the day before I change them.
