oil leaking from the shaft that activates clutch/gear changes...just above and in front of the drive sprocket. What is required to fix this?

Hi,
Which 400 are we talking about RD or XS ?? I would guess at the age on XS if so you need a push rod oil seal add (perhaps a push rod) so if you could supply a photo of the leak I could perhaps help more.
don't forget there is a dedicated Classics workshop forum which may be a better place to post a question like this
Regards Jim

Jim, thanks for the quick reply...XS Special US, leaks profusely from the pushrod guide if the pushrod is removed while running... the end of the pushrod appears to perhaps take some kind of seal, just don't know. Would a photo of that be of any help? Bill

Fire a foto up lets have a look ..... the crankcase should hold an oil seal it would be good to see what you have

Jim, more info...there is an orange plastic/bakelite press-in ?? removeable?? at the opening of the push-rod hole, about a half cm thick, behind which is perhaps a groove large enough for an O-ring seal. About a half inch beyond that groove is a smaller groove I can detect with a wire hook, does not seem large enough for an O-ring. Consistent with the groove near the opening, behind the orange press-in, is shiny evidence on the push-rod of something contacting/polishing it...maybe an O-ring now missing.... Did a photo send? Bill

Just post a picture on here. Best way is to upload the picture to photobucket or imageshack.
Imageshack: Copy and paste the "Forum" address that it gives you on the right side

Photobucket: Copy and paste the "IMG Code" into your message here and you're all set

Hey Jim, finally found an exploded view of gearbox, clearly showing the orange plastic thing as the push rod seal...so I know what I need to do.... Thanks for the help. Bill

If I remember correctly, remove anything that may be in the way of removing that cover, such as shift lever etc, remove screws on cover, pry it loose if required and slide cover over shaft that was holding shift lever. Replace seal that shaft went through, replace gasket, or use proper type silicone for gasket, re-install, and add any fluids that ran out. re-install shift lever etc, and adjust as needed for proper operation. Make sure you put drain pan under to catch any oil when cover is loose.
