Update shot.

Got the front fork on, tomorrow I'll put the gas tanks in and run all of the fuel lines and pretty much finish up everything in the rear half of the bike. After that it's just the head gasket, the carburetor, all of the wiring in the headlight housing (waiting on a new headlight, not gonna use the one in the pic), and cosmetic stuff.

Did a little back tracking today. First thing I did today was attempt to put the kick starter on, just because I could. Turns out I didn't wind the spring properly, so the kick starter wouldn't spring back up. I had to take the crankcase back off and disassemble half of the transmission and crankshaft to get the thing wound properly. Once that was done I put the fuel tanks in and ran all of the hoses, which are now ready for the carburetor to be installed (which is waiting on the head gaskets...).

After that I decided to get back to polishing the front wheel. After I saw how much rust was on the wheel, I decided that leaving it as polished bare metal probably wasn't the best idea. Not sure why I thought it would work. So I sanded all of the rust off, then pulled the back wheel off (already polished) and disassembled it. I prepped the wheels and the brake drums for paint, and then painted.

I test fitted the coverless seat today and put the seat lock back on the frame. It's mostly little stuff left to do. If the head gaskets arrive tomorrow, I could have it running tomorrow. We will see.

Anyone know what kind of oil I should put in it?

Oh man that sucks! That is the worst when you get something back together and something small makes you have to take it apart! Sounds like you are making big progress with the build. You should have it together by the end of the week! Are you doing the painting yourself?

Put Amsoil in it. As far as weight of oil you got me!

Yeah, it was annoying, but no big deal. I am doing all of the painting myself. I wish I could have afforded powdercoating, but that was far beyond our budget. I'll ask the guys at the dealer what oil I should use.

Made a bunch more progress today, I am essentially done except for the stuff that requires parts that I don't have.

Got the wheels put back together and back on the bike, I got the brake lines, the choke line, and the odometer line run and attached to their respective places. I also cleaned up the basement, which helped a lot. If you had looked around at all of the stuff on the floor, it seemed like I had a ton of work left to do. I cleaned up all of the tools and old parts and realized that I had nothing left to do until I got my head gaskets.

With that, I decided that I would go ahead and paint the seat pan. I was going to leave it, but I decided that it was too rusty and I had nothing else to do.

I also took the baffling out of my exhaust pipe. It was really nasty in there, so I think I'm going to replace the muffler. It's got a bolt stuck in it anyway which prevents me from putting the cover back on. No big deal.

Well the dealer lied (again). Said my gaskets would be here Tuesday or Wednesday. They won't be here until tomorrow...or today...Friday. Anyway, I am moving in to Georgia Tech over the next two days. Taking a bunch of stuff down in the morning, but then coming back home. Hopefully I'll have enough time tomorrow afternoon to make it up to the dealer, get my gaskets, and get this thing running. We will see.

Gaskets didn't come in until after I left for school. Came back home this weekend (I'm only half an hour away from Tech) and got my gaskets and got everything put together. Started her up and she ran for a few seconds and then died. Same results numerous more tries. Obviously the carburetor is not adjusted properly. This is exactly what it was doing before I tore it all down, so it has nothing to do with the restoration (thank goodness). I am going to take it up to Yamaha and see if they'll service the carb for me. I'm sure they'll try to charge me an arm and a leg for it.

They are probably going to want an ear with that arm and leg! At least they got your parts!

Didn't have to take it up to Yamaha (thank goodness). We got her running over the weekend and she ran like a champ. Start up is still a little difficult and the idle needs some adjusting, but other than that, no problems.

Only a few things left, such as the seat cover and the fenders. I'll get pics the next time I go home from school.

Nice! That is good to hear and can't wait to see the finished product.
