Default 2001 Yamaha 1200 xlt High RPM

Im new to this forum and sort of lost in the dark with my Yamaha. I have a 2001 1200 xlt with 82 hours on it. All the service is done properly and it has been running like a champ. Upon my last lake trip this weekend, the ski started reving really high. From a dead still start, if you gave 100% throttle it would start to take off, then rev up really high. It would also do the same in sharp turns. If you ease into the throttle it would take off fine and once reached around 22 mph if you gave a 100% throttle it would perform as expected. I thought mabey i had trash in my water pick up or a wear ring was going bad. Any ideas, I dont want to keep running the ski and burn something up. Im open to any suggestions, thank you all. God Bless.!

I'd suggest looking at the impeller closely. It's possible that it's got either a leak at the housing, allowing air to enter. OR it's possible that the leading edges of the impeller could be dinged up which reduces efficiency. OR (worst case) the impeller outer edges and the inner part of the ring can be worn, which causes excessive clearance and/or cavitation.

At one time I remember seeing an XLT where the cavitation had burned the impeller and wear ring so badly that the ring separated from it's outer housing and made contact with the impeller...which destroyed both. But that was an extreme case!

All this stuff can be "eyeballed" while looking into the rear of the pump (on the trailer engine off) or through the intake from the bottom. If the pump housing sections are leaking, you can't see that visually without actually removing the pump and disassembling it.

Good luck. Reminds me of why I quit messing with waverunners.

I replaced the whole jet pump housing with a wsm housing and a nylon wear ring. My impilere has some marks on the blades about 3/4 the way down toward the wear ring that looks like a coral reef type deal.. No holes in the impeller thou. Once i installed the new housing and wear ring i took it for a run and it did do some better but still does the same thing as before. Then to top the day off, the reverse cable broke. Money is all it boils down too! But thanks for your advice it all is very helpful. Im always open to any advice or suggestions.!! Thanks.!

You ski sounds like its cavatating. Try adding a pump stuffer to your pump. Thats a big ski and its not going to take off at slow speeds like a lighter ski would.
