Anyone else have or had this problem. I recently bought a 2000 GP800 and it ha s a problem with the throttle sticking open. Specifically after I have ridden it for a while then bring it into shore and sitting for a bit, the throttle will stick wide open. Of course after letting it cool down the problem goes away.
The carbs have been professionally rebuilt by Payne's Powersports in Louisville, TN. Even after this being done the problem persists. I found an article in another forum that detailed the "fix" for this, but I just wondered if anyone on this forum had the same issue, and had an alternative fix. Yamaha recommends replacing the carbs with new units **cough** 800.00 each, really??**cough** so I don't think Ill go that route. Any help out there? Van |

Is the cable sticking or the butterfly in carbs?

The carbs. I have seen a post on Greenhulk.net that it is the throttle shafts where they meet the bushings, and that it is the bushings that expand when they heat up.

I have the same problem with my 2001 xl800, I can ride it all day without any problems but if I beach it and go for a swim, the throttle sticks open until it gets going again.
I tried lubing the able but thats definately not the problem. This is strange. |

If it is the throttle shaft bushings swelling after they heat up, shouldn't this happen when the ski is operating?
It seems like its only after a cool down period resting on the beach that it happens for me. And it always happens there for some reason. Guess I need to stop going to the beach

Managed to install a return spring on the throttle cable attachment arm. Had to actually drill a small hole for it to attach to but this little quick fix easily took care of the problem. Using a relatively small return spring is enough force to overcome the stickyness, without adding too much resistance to the throttle itself.
Note: been a while since I posted on here and since than I have traded up. Now own a brand new 2011 FZR.

The reason that it happens after you park the ski for any amount of time is because there is no air circulation when the ski is at rest, and so you get heat rising from the surrounding engine. This causes expansion in the bushings and thus the stickyness. |
