beartracker slipping out of gear

I'm new here so bear with me... i have an 03 beartracker 250 and it often slips out of gear when i try to shift if im throttling on it heavily. espicially in the mud, water, etc. when i try to shift it just goes out of gear and revs up but doesnt move and i can hear like clicking in the motor then it pops into gear and goes... anyone know?
