Question Is it worth it?

Ok, so I have a question for everyone. I have a friend that I work with who has a 1993 XJ600 hes selling for $500. It has none of the body panels but the seat and gas tank, and it idles but dosent run very well (dies under throttle). When holding the clutch all the way in (adjusted both all the way in, and out from the notch on the handlebar) the bike catches and dies shifting into 1st. If I can drop him to $400, would it be worth it to buy even though I would have to strip it down, repaint the framework, and figure out whats wrong with the engine/trans. I will have to purchase seperatly the speedo cluster, front covers and body panels, also theres some oil seeping from some of the seals underneath. The bike hasn't been run in about a year or more.

I know alot about cars, but nothing about bikes. I figure if the price is right... maybe I can learn by building this one up.

The way I look at it is if you think you can fix it up to your liking, anything is worth buying. The amount of knowledge you'll gain by rebuilding a bike is huge. Me personally, I know squat about the inner workings of an engine (especially carbs) so I wouldn't even attempt a project like that since it would be at the shop getting fixed

Welcoome to the forum. If you end up getting it, start up a rebuild thread so we can all see the progress from day 1.

Well it wont be a full engine rebuild. Just replacing the leaking seals and new panels with a repaint. I don't want to spend the cost of a new bike getting this one up and running.

I was just offered, so I haven't had any time to do any research, what is a few parts company's to get replacement parts? Both OE and aftermarket. I need to price out components before I decide...

Also I hope it wont be a full rebuild... Just cleaning the carbs and retuning it.

Usually for OEM parts I go to partshark.com. Aftermarket I can't really help you since most of the companies I go to are for newer bikes, sorry.
