Grinding 2nd gear

I have a 1980 Yamaha XS850L Midnight Special. When I shift up into 2nd gear it will never set in the gear but grind. It started recently. The other gears work fine and shifting down to 2nd works, but it will slip out every so often and cause the bike to lurch. What would be a solution to fix this? Any advice or experience will be greatly appreciated!!!

Then you should jump to 3rd,
