Default tt600 spark

Hey guys,
my 85 tt600 decided to crap itself on my way home from work friday night ffs! all the lights still work but when i kick it in the guts theres no spark. Researching on the net I discovered the cdi's tend to fail due to heat from the exhaust. so i connected a test light to the orange wire that runs from the cdi to the coil and got nothing. just wondering if theres a way to test the stator to make sure its not that before i buy a new cdi for it? I have disconnected the battery and kick started it with the lights switched on and they didnt light up but im not sure if this is the correct method of testing the stator (without a multimeter). any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Dave.

Probably should try to get hold of a manual (you get a free download of t'net) and multimeter. It will give various methods for testing continuity and resistance.
