Default 1982 XJ650 Maxim /Oil

Hi,
I have a 1982 XJ650 Maxim. It's been sitting in the garage for years. I cleaned it up and runs vey well. What I need to know is, The final drive is almost out of gear oil. The book says to use SAE 80W GL 4 Hypoid oil. What is compatible to this at the auto parts store, like Napa , autozone...ect. The closest Yamaha dealer is 30 + miles away and I really don't want to drive that far for a Qt. of oil. Any help would be much appreciated.

Are there any motorcycle shops in your area other than the Yamaha dealer that's far away?

I haven't seen any in the area. I know we have a couple of indies that work on HD's maybe they work on metric also. I'll check...I hadn't thought about that. Thank you.

Any Hypoid 80 gear oil will work .. but I would think more on why you are loosing oil from the final gear ... I have a 30 year old bike that has not lost any !!! & before you say I have had the bike from new ! ... perhaps run through how you are checking the level !!

JimR, I had noticed a little wetness around the fill plug when I put it away and didn't think much of it until I pulled it out for my son to use. The oil was checked by my son 1st on the jiffy stand and I told him he needed to make sure the bike was on level pavement and on the center stand. Either way no oil can be visually seen in the final drive. I already checked to see if the seals were leaking. There is no evidence of oil leakage but that may change if it's completely dry now. Once filled it may leak. We'll see.

Just to inform anyone that's interested. I have been told by 2 different shops in the area that any SAE 80W API rated GL 4,5 or 6 Oil can be used in place of the hypoid oil.

I found out that the drain plug somehow loosend up about 1/4 of a turn. Just enought to make some wetness but not enought to cause a drip. It had probably been like that for years going un-noticed. Thanks for the help and suggestions.
