one of the two petcocks on my 1976 xs500 leaks. can i just remove or block it off and run the one good one to both carbs without a problem? or should it be replaced? does anyone know why there is even two of these to begin with?

Just get a repair kit for the fuel tap ... you do need both taps to work in order to get the fuel to the carbs !!! You will see 2 small pan head screws on the plate that has on/off/res on it remove those screws, and the arm behind that, and you will find a round rubber piece ( the faulty part) you may find if this part is removed and made supple again your leak will be gone, along with cleaning the rest of the tap
Regards Jim

just completely rebuilt both petcocks with new parts and they both still leak. they leak from the main body gasket, drain screw and from the front of the on/off/res valve body. any suggestions? can i use a gasket sealer?

Did you replace the round rubber piece (with the holes in it) and the wavy washer ? if so I would guess .. could post up a picture of the main body gasket & the taps so I can see what your seeing ?
